SANTIAGO (AFP) – Luis Suárez salió de la banca para llevar a Uruguay a una victoria por 2-0 sobre Chile, eliminando al equipo local de la Copa del Mundo y supuestamente el adiós predeterminado a la «generación de oro».
Suárez, que sustituyó al lesionado Edinson Cavani, improvisó un chileno en el minuto 79. El resultado convirtió al «Pistolero» en el máximo goleador de la historia de las eliminatorias con 29 goles, uno por delante del argentino Lionel Messi.
El Mundial de Qatar en noviembre será el cuarto de Suárez, y adelantó que el gol que marcó en la noche de Santiago fue el último de Celeste en una eliminatoria mundialista.
«Es mi último partido eliminatorio», dijo Suárez. «A la edad de treinta y cinco años, es imposible para mí llegar a alguien más».
Federico Valverde anotó el segundo gol de Uruguay con un disparo lejano en el minuto 90.
Chile no solo necesitaba una victoria para mirar hacia las eliminatorias para clasificar a Qatar 2022. Tampoco necesitaba ni a Perú ni a Colombia para vencer a Paraguay y Venezuela, pero eso no sucedió.
La zona de play-off quedó en manos de Perú tras vencer 2-0 a Paraguay en Lima. El triunfo 1-0 de Colombia sobre Venezuela en Porto Ordaz no fue suficiente.
Hoy era una fecha triste para Chile, ya que era quizás la última oportunidad mundialista de un grupo de jugadores que llevaron al fútbol chileno a conquistas que desconocías: ganar dos veces la Copa América y quedar segundos en la Copa Confederaciones.
Varios de ellos estuvieron en la corte el martes: Arturo Vidal, Gary Medel, Alexis Sánchez y Charles Aranguez. Faltaba el arquero y capitán Claudio Bravo, sancionado.
“No creo que haya una fecha fija (para el retiro), más cuando se trata de tantos futbolistas”, comentó el técnico chileno-uruguayo Martín Lasarte. «Lo determinará la situación física y deportiva que tengan en el próximo reto. Todavía hay quienes tienen que ceder y a algunos les puede resultar difícil».
De entrada, Uruguay insinuaba mayor peligrosidad y el arquero de Chile, Brian Cortés, era figura.
La reacción de Chile, sin embargo, recuperó el control y estableció su dominio ofensivo, pero se encontró con el tradicional rigor defensivo de Uruguay.
La Roja ha sido eliminada de la final de la Copa del Mundo por segunda vez consecutiva. En cambio, Uruguay se clasificará por cuarta vez consecutiva para el primer evento futbolístico.
Una racha de malos resultados hizo que Uruguay resbalara al séptimo lugar en noviembre y precipitó la destitución de Oscar Tabárez, el técnico septuagenario que había estado en el cargo durante 15 años.
Diego Alonso tomó las riendas y comandó una gran reacción, sumando cuatro triunfos juntos para la clasificación directa.
Uruguay consiguió su boleto al vencer 1-0 a Perú en Montevideo la semana pasada y terminó tercero en la tabla con 28 puntos.
«Vivimos momentos complicados con la destitución del ‘Maestro’ (Tabarez), porque decían que algunos jugadores eran molestos, no estaban a su nivel, pero mostramos una rebeldía», explicó Suárez. «Uno puede ser bueno o malo, pero la dedicación a la camiseta también debe serlo».
Pese a la eliminación y derrota en la despedida, el público chileno despidió al equipo con aplausos y cánticos de apoyo.
Tras el pitido final, Suárez corrió varios metros para abrazar a Vidal, su pareja cuando jugaba en el Barcelona de España.
«Nos vamos muy tristes. Gracias a todos los que nos apoyaron. Esta generación ha dado tanto y seguiremos luchando. Eso es lo único que queda», dijo el delantero Joaquín Montesinos, quien debutó con La Roja. No termina aquí para nosotros. Tienes que trabajar mil ahora. Y alguna generación dorada aún puede ofrecer mucho”.

At the start, Uruguay insinuated greater danger and the Chilean goalkeeper Brayan Cort\u00e9s was a figure.<\/p>
But Chile reacted to regain possession and impose offensive dominance, but were met with the traditional Uruguayan defensive firmness.<\/p>
La Roja was left out of a World Cup for the second time in a row. Instead, Uruguay will go for the fourth time in a row to the top football event.<\/p>
A poor run of results dropped Uruguay to seventh place in November and precipitated the sacking of \u00d3scar Tab\u00e1rez, the septuagenarian coach who had been at the helm for 15 years.<\/p>
